GOVERNMENT PROLONGS THE POLICY ON FREE WATER TO THE END OF THE YEAR
On
the 23rd of September, as Ghanaians sat comfortably in their humble aboard,
the Ministry of sanitation and water resource headed by Honorable Cecilia Abena
Dapaah ordered an immediate press release to the public stating that, His
Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-
Addo has prolonged the Free Water policy,
which he started on the 12th of April, 2020, for another three
months that is, from 1st October to 31st December 2020.
According to the Government, the decision was taken in order to enable Ghanaians to continue with the safety protocols against the coronavirus pandemic, laying more emphasis on the washing of hands under running water.
In the press release, the minister of
sanitation and water resource also urged all Ghanaians to make judicious use of
the water, as they observed the safety protocols, and again encouraged
landlords and tanker service providers to abstain from charging or selling
water to consumers, since the government is paying for the water.
After the press release, most Ghanaians
expressed their views on the decision the Government had taken. Some went in
accordance with the Government and said that it was the best decision a
President would take in these difficult times. Others also said it was a
strategy that the President was using in order to gain more votes in the upcoming
elections. Most Ghanaians, especially residence of Labadi, Madina, and Ashaiman,
expressed the difficulties they had faced due to water shortage, ever since the
first three months, when the President started the Free
Water policy. Some said water was scarce to the extent that, they
had to use rainwater to carry out most of their domestic activities. Others
said they were still paying water bills even though the Government said water
was free, and nothing had been done to those who collected these bills from
them.
Indeed, the Free Water policy
is a good decision but, it is not free as long as most Ghanaians complain that
they are still paying water bills, and again, it is not enabling Ghanaians to carry
out the safety protocols against the coronavirus pandemic, as long as most
residences complain of water shortage.
